This product was first test marketed in Warsaw Poland. A plant was placed on the checkout counter and a plant waterer inserted into the plant. Next to the plant a glass vase was placed with eight watering balls of different sizes.
When customers came to the checkout counter, the sales people showed the people one of the watering balls from the glass vase and asked them if they had ever seen these. People look at them and said they had no idea what they were.
When shown how the watering ball was used with a plant, more than 65 percent of the people made a purchase of at least one ball. Almost 70 percent of the sales made this way we were for one ball only. And the ball chosen was the larger ball.
There was a very high resale rate on this product. Customers who lived in Poland typically came back to buy six to 12 more balls. They bought them for their own use and for gifts. And some of these customers have become regular customers who return to buy more watering balls for gifts.
Some customers were from the United States and after returning home decided that they wanted more balls. Generally they have ordered these by e-mail.
In one case, however, the customer could not find the watering balls in the United States and asked a friend of hers who was coming to Poland to visit our show room and by her more watering balls.
A United States wholesaler ordered a sample pack of 12 large balls and immediately showed them to customers at floral shops. Within three days of receiving the sample pack, the wholesaler requested an order of one pallet that contains 36 cases with 12 watering balls in each case.
