Regardless of where you go in Poland, you see windows displaying beautifully done lace work. And tables are decorated with beautifully decorated and patterned linen.
A large amount of Polish lace is made in Eastern Poland by hand and by individuals who make pieces to order of jobbers. These jobbers collect the lace and resell it to distributors and retailers in Poland. Because it is in such high demand, very little of this hand made lace is exported.
Hand made linen pieces also come from this same region. Linen is hand decorated in traditional patterns, once again by Polish women in the linen cottage industry that is locate for the most part in Eastern Poland. And like the hand made lace, the hand made linen is for the most part sold only in Poland.
The hand made linen and lace can be found for sale in high end gift shops in Poland where it commands very high prices. Hand made lace can also be found in many of the local traders markets where it is generally much lower priced since it is so common among the Polish people. Every traditional Polish home has handmade lace somewhere in the home and much of it comes from these local markets.
In the high end shops, where tourists and the business people tend to shop, one finds extensive selections of the best hand made linen and lace that Poland has to offer. And one pays the price that equals the value. Even though it is very expensive, there is no shortage of customers for these pieces of linen and lace.
At the same time, there are factories that product linen and lace that is used all over the world. These factories have a reputation for high quality and reliability for supplying their customers.
Some of the linen factories are known to not sell to major retailers because they want to maintain good relationships with smaller retailers who sell their products in dispersed markets. These linen factories work hard to maintain quality and are reluctant to be forced into quality reductions by large retailers who push for price concessions. Their position is that there is always a market for high quality linen.
